The Cannelle have been the stage of many barbary episodes. On March 15th 1514 a small galley with Turkish pirates succeeded in capturing the galleon Stella di Marsiglia. The ship was plundered of its load of cold cuts, cloths and wine, while the members of its crew could run to safety up the hill.
The tower built to protect the cove took many names to distinguish it from the one at Talamone bearing the same name: Torre de' Cannelli, Torre delle Cannelle del Monte or Torre delle Cannelle Argentate, but the cove has always been simply named Cannelle.
