In the ancient texts concerning the history of the headland there appears the toponym Cabo della Chiana indicating the point dominating this stretch of sea. In time the name was changed to Ciana. The word Chiana means marshy place explained perhaps by two factors, i.e. the presence of an emerging riffle a few tens of meters from the headland or a spring nearby called Fonte della Madonna (Our Lady's spring).
Also the tower built as a protection was given several different names with the passing of time: Torre Riana, Torre della Piana, Torre della Chiana, Torre S. Maria but Ciana is the name that still applies as far as the headland and the tower remains are concerned.
